Genoa

Population: 608.998; Elevation: 19 m a.s.l.; Name People: Genovesi

Genoa (called “Zena” in its antique and popular name) it’s the capital of the Liguria and is recognized worldwide as a city constantly striving for excellence status in tourism, hospitality and logistics.For its central position in the historical centre of the Region it was intitled the “Mediterranean crossroad”, strategic gateway for the Mare Nostrum and Northern Europe. Soon the City became the melting pot of numerous cultures and traditions, and still is today.

From the Middle Age throughout the 18th cent. the city has experienced its “Golden Era”, arising as one of the glorious Sea Republics, counting colonies from West to the Far East and Genoese merchants were known and respected around the world. In the globalized world of today, the Port of Genoa, proudly recognized as the main Mediterranean port and one of the most important cruise terminals, counts every year the presence of 1.2 million tourists. That’s aslo why one of the most known symbols of Genoa is La Lanterna (the lighthouse). In the last 15 years, the shape of the city has dramatically changed, for social (missmash presence of foreign communities) and economical reasons.The new face of the city started to mould in 1990, when Genoa was chosen as one of the venues for the Soccer World Cup. Then, in 1992, the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus has given the city the opportunity to give new life to the Doge’s Palace, that now hosts exhibitions, concerts, conferences and relaxing occasions in a unique setting. In 2004, was nominated European Cultural Capital.

Main Sights: the Old Port (Porto Antico) renewed by the worldwide leading architect Renzo Piano who has enriched the area with the most admired Aquarium in Europe;  The Old Town itself with its medieval labyrinth and narrow streets, the so-called carrugi and part of it, Palazzi dei Rolli is UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Famous personalities: among all the extraordinaire violinist Nicolò Paganini and Risorgimento hero Giuseppe Mazzini.
Genoa offers top-level hospitality and choice. In the recent years, many a hotel have been erected in order to satisfy the ever-growing demands of modern tourism. The city is easily accessible through the highway, the ferry terminal, the underground line, the train station, and the “Cristoforo Colombo” airport, which is open all-year-through.

 

Typical food: trofie al pesto (handmade pasta with herb sauce), focaccia (sort of pizza bread) and farinata (thin, crisp, pizza-like pancake, made of chickpea flour).

There are 2 football teams in Genoa: Genoa Cricket and Football Club that is the oldest football club in Italy (founded in 1893 by James Richardson Spensley, an English doctor) and U.C. Sampdoria.

 

 

 

Imperia

Population: 40.500; Elevation: 10 m a.s.l.; Name people: Imperiesi

Coastal city of Liguria and capital of the province of Imperia, the city is situated on the so-called Riviera dei Fiori (The Flowers’ Riviera) that’s why it is well known for the cultivation of flowers and olive trees, and it's a popular destination for visitors in summer.

Imperia consists of the two historical districts of Porto Maurizio and Oneglia, which lies on either side of the River Impero that gives its name to the city. Porto Maurizio is situated on a peninsula to the west of the river, stretching along the coastline. It is the more colourful and wealthy district of the city, threaded by narrow lanes known as carrugi, and its economy centres around the tourist industry. Porto Maurizio was a Roman settlement, Portus Maurici, but the modern city of Imperia was founded in 1923 by Mussolini, by the union of the communes of Porto Maurizio, Oneglia and other nearby towns. Imperia is a young city, with an economy based on tourism and flower cultivation.

 

Main Sights: Old Town called “Parasio”; Convent of Santa Chiara; Naval Museum; Olive Tree Museum; Villa Grock; Church of Saint John Baptist.

Famous Personalities: Edmondo De Amicis, Italian novelist, journalist, poet and short-story writer. His best-known book is the children's novel Heart; Renato Dulbecco, Nobel Prize winner for Medecine in 1975.

 

 

Loano

Population: 11.800; Elevation: 5 m a.s.l.; Name people: Loanesi

A formerly little fishermen town, Loano  is nowadays a characteristic seaside holiday place in the Province of Savona. Located at about 60 km from Genoa, Loano has a beautiful position between the sea and the mountains on the part of Coast called Riviera di Ponente, that favoures it of a perfect climate situation for which is called the Isola di Ponente (the Westerly Island).

The History of Loano goes back to prehistory, but during the Romans it looks like it was an important coastal site because of the foundings of beautiful mosaics, which are conserved in the Town Hall Building. Feudal property of the Benedectine Monks during the 8th cent., the following history of Loano was determined by the control of its territory by the Genoan Doria Family, with the title of Princes. After 1770, it was included in the territory of the Republic of Genoa and had to take also part to the Napoleonic battles.

In 2010 it has been rewarded as "European Town of Sports".

Main Sights: Down Town main road, Church of San John the Baptist, Monastery of Monte Carmelo, Palazzo Doria (Town Hall building), Roman Mosaics (Town Hall building interior), Albenga Castle.

 

Liguria Oriental Coast

The Ligurian coast is the perfect background for such a superb artistic and cultural ensemble: our own “Crown jewels” being Portofino, with its worldwide-known marine reserve, the Cinque Terre National Park and the countless, enchanting seaside resorts.

With the new millennium, both the City and the Liguria region authorities have concentrated their efforts in discovering and emphasizing a territory and a culture that traditionally, from the valiant sailors to the merchants, has been open to contact and cooperation between people of all cultures.

Enchanting towns part of the beautiful Riviera are: Rapallo, Portofino, Santa Margherita Ligure, Cogorno and all the towns of the Cinque Terre .
